Dear Black Friday – Please Put Groceries on Sale!
I saw a meme online that said:
Dear Black Friday,
We already have TVs. Please put groceries on sale.
So funny… so sad!
It got me thinking about how much money I’m saving by growing some food!
This is what I harvested for the week.
I found local prices for organic produce at Target and Kroger.
$30 bell peppers (they are stacked in the basket)
$20 cilantro
$5 beans
$5 tomatoes
Total = $60
Plus, groceries are bought in after-tax dollars so assuming a 30% increase in earned dollars are necessary to purchase this produce, this is actually $70 in pre-tax wages worth of groceries.
Total = $70
Obviously organic produce is more expensive than conventionally grown. The food I’m growing is not only organic, it’s actually superior because I use ZERO pesticides, not even organic pesticides. And ZERO herbicides. Strong soil heavy with homemade compost makes pesticides unnecessary (for the most part, we get some bug damage but well within the norm) and the hard work of weeding makes herbicides unnecessary. (It also makes a gym membership unnecessary = more money saved!)
