Snake Noodle Beans for Halloween
Creepy cooked black snakes to eat for Halloween! Or anytime you’re feeling a little dark and eerie, or amused by the ick factor.
What are these bizarre vegetables?!
Red Noodle Beans
These beans grow up to 2 feet long! They are naturally a burgundy red color. However, after steaming they turn a snake like black!
They grow beautifully on a trellis, dazzling in their merlot hue and adorable pink tinged flowers and cascade of green leaves in groups of three. (Not to be confused with poison ivy. Most bean plants grow with their leaves in groups of three, so there is more to identifying poison ivy than counting leaves. There is no relation between poison ivy and beans.) But after a proper cooking in a steamer pot, these beans look like black snakes! They even wriggle a bit like them when you go to procure one on your fork. It’s creepy! Expect your stomach to comprehend your mind is struggling with the ick factor at the appearance of consuming black snakes. It’s the perfect Halloween side dish. And it’s incredibly healthy, too! Perfect for balancing out those candy indulgences.
Steamed red noodle beans also make for an excellent Halloween prank!
However, if you want to enjoy this alarming vegetable in October, you will need to spend the summer growing it yourself. This is not something found in stores and is extremely rare even in farmer’s markets.
